Switching Your Primary ArcGIS Portal for Single Sign-On (SSO)

This guide provides the necessary steps and critical considerations when your organization decides to switch the primary ArcGIS portal used for Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication in UtiliSync. This process is necessary if you are moving from an ArcGIS Online account to an ArcGIS Enterprise account, or vice versa.

While UtiliSync allows you to connect multiple ArcGIS portals, only one can be designated for SSO. Switching this primary connection requires two specific updates to ensure continuous user access and data integrity.

1. Updating ArcGIS Usernames for UtiliSync Users

When you switch your primary SSO portal, the format or naming convention of user accounts often changes. For example, a username on ArcGIS Online (like jsmith_companyname ) might be different from the username on your internal ArcGIS Enterprise installation (like jsmith ).

If the ArcGIS username stored in UtiliSync does not match the active username in the new SSO portal, the user will be unable to sign in.

Action Required:

These updates must be performed immediately after the new portal has been designated for SSO. You must review and update the ArcGIS Username field for every user in your UtiliSync Admin panel.

  1. Identify the New Username: Obtain the correct and exact username for each UtiliSync user from your newly designated ArcGIS portal (Online or Enterprise).
  2. Access UtiliSync Users: Navigate to the User Management section of the UtiliSync Admin app.

Edit User Profiles: For each user:

    • Select their profile to edit.
    • Locate the field labeled ArcGIS Username.
    • Update this field with the user’s new, accurate username from the newly integrated portal.

Failure to update this credential will result in sign-in errors for the affected users.

2. Updating Layer URLs

Your UtiliSync application uses Map Layer URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) to connect directly to the map services hosted by your ArcGIS portal.

When you switch your primary SSO portal (especially when moving to a self-hosted ArcGIS Enterprise environment), the base URL (the domain) where these services are hosted will change. Even if the service name remains the same, the path to access it is different.

For example, a service URL might change from:

  • ArcGIS Online: https://services.arcgis.com/ABC12345/arcgis/rest/services/MyService/FeatureServer
  • ArcGIS Enterprise: https://gis.mycompany.com/server/rest/services/MyService/FeatureServer

If you do not update the URLs, UtiliSync will continue to look for map layers in the old portal, resulting in broken maps and missing data for your field teams.

Action Required:

These updates must be performed immediately after the new portal has been designated for SSO. You must update the Layer URLs for every map service configured within UtiliSync.

  1. Identify New URLs: Navigate to your new ArcGIS portal and locate the "Rest Endpoint" URL for every map service, feature service, and tile layer used in UtiliSync.
  2. Access UtiliSync Layer Configuration: Go to the Map & Data Configuration section of the UtiliSync Admin app.

Edit Layers: For each configured layer:

    • Select the layer to edit its settings.
    • Locate the Layer URL or Service Endpoint field.
    • Replace the old URL with the new, correct URL from the newly integrated portal.

Summary Checklist

Component Reason for Update Action
Usernames ArcGIS username format changes between Online and Enterprise environments. Update the ArcGIS Username field for all UtiliSync users in the Admin panel.
Layer URLs The domain/host address for map services changes when switching portals. Update the Layer URL for all configured map services in the UtiliSync Map Configuration.

Ensure both these critical steps are completed immediately after establishing the new SSO connection to maintain seamless operation.
