How Ticket Pin Placement is Determined

The pin location is calculated as follows:

  1. The one call center sends over several points to define the locate area.
  2. The average X coordinate of all of the points is used to calculate the ticket pin's X coordinate. Same for the Y coordinate.

This results in the coordinate of the ticket point being a close approximation of the locate area centroid.

If the locate area is rectangular, then the calculated point will be at center of the rectangle. However, if the locate area is an odd shape, like an "L", then it is possible the ticket point will fall outside of the locate area completely.

For this reason, we recommend using the ticket pins as a rough approximation. The locator will need to click on the ticket to view the actual locate area.
